Embezzlement
Embezzlement is the act of wrongfully taking or misappropriating funds or property enTrusted to an individual’s care, often in a professional or fiduciary context. It involves a breach of Trust where the perpetrator, typically an employee or official, uses their position to illegally benefit themselves at the expense of another party.
For example, a company Accountant might transfer Money from the company’s accounts into their personal account over a period of time, concealing these transactions from their employer.
In a notable case, a former finance officer in a nonprofit organization embezzled over $1 million by creating fake invoices and redirecting payments to accounts she controlled, leading to her conviction and imprisonment.
