Percent Change

Percent change is a measure of how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value, expressed as a percentage. It is calculated using the formula:

Percent Change = ((New Value – Old Value) / Old Value) * 100

Example 1: If the price of a Stock rises from $50 to $75:

  • Old Value = $50
  • New Value = $75
  • Percent Change = ((75 – 50) / 50) * 100 = (25 / 50) * 100 = 50%

Example 2: If a population decreases from 1,000 to 800:

  • Old Value = 1,000
  • New Value = 800
  • Percent Change = ((800 – 1000) / 1000) * 100 = (-200 / 1000) * 100 = -20%

Percent change is widely used in finance, Economics, and other fields to compare the relative change in values over time.
